Thanks for following my sport journey! I’m Ava Rodgers (Gidget), an Aussie cyclist from Western Australia.
Gidget is my middle name and nickname.
I love sport, I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember. The first sport I ever did was AFL, then I tried karate for a couple of years, and now I compete in triathlons, track and road cycling, swimming, cross country, and all things athletics.
My first love and passion was running, which started in year five. In year four I nearly came last in my school cross country, after the race I told my mum I wasn’t happy with that result and would she coach me. So my mum and dad started to coach me at the local oval. The next cross country came around and I won! Everything escalated from there. I joined Little Athletics and started to compete in cross country and triathlon races.
In late 2023 I participated in the Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS) talent identification testing for rowing, kayaking and cycling. Over a couple of hours I did a range of different strength and endurance tests and physical measurements. I was fortunate to be invited into all three sport development programs. I chose cycling because I already loved it in triathlon. The program involved being introduced to track cycling in a velodrome. Very different to what I was used to. I absolutely love it. In ten weeks I had a crash course (literally) into everything track cycling and then competed at the Aus Cycling Track State Championships and rode away with two gold and three silver.
Now my life is about everything cycling but I still have swimming in my training program. I run very occasionally and I still enjoy it.

Outside of sport I enjoy hanging with my school and sport friends, and posting on my social media channels to encourage girls to stay in sport.
I am currently a Peer Support Leader at my high school and was a middle school House Leader. I was also the Sports Reporter for my school’s year book.
